How I Train for Food Challenges After a Break!!

The purpose of this article is to update everyone on how I train and prepare now in 2020 for food challenges after taking a long break to diet and lose weight. As most of you know, I took the first three months of this year off from attempting food challenges to diet and lose some of the weight I gained during my very busy 2019 eating challenge tours. Along the way, many people reached out and asked me what I do after taking long breaks from eating big meals to get my stomach capacity increased back up so that my body is ready to attempt big food challenges again. Back in 2016, “Magic Mitch” Dombrowski and I put together a competition training tutorial video that explained what I did back then to train and get ready during the 24 hours before a giant food challenge or eating contest. If you haven’t watched it before, be sure to check this video out first:

Back then I trained by eating A LOT of healthy fruits and vegetables, which I mentioned in some of the original articles written back when this website was established. Nowadays, I have a little more fun and my method is simpler, letting “sandwich artists” do the food prep for me instead. We just published a video about my updated 2-day training methods that I use to get back in “eating shape.” On day #1, I go to Subway and order 4 footlong sandwiches, each loaded with healthy vegetables and either buffalo sauce or yellow mustard. I bring them home to my kitchen and try to eat them as fast as possible, while also trying to drink 1 gallon of water as well. Then on day #2, I do the exact same thing, but try to beat day #1’s time by a significant margin. I’ve always followed the Expanding Your Stomach Using Food AND Water method of capacity training, again documented in this video:

Both videos have subtitles added, so be sure to use those if needed while watching!! Hopefully the two videos have been informational for you, and please remember that they both focus on what I do to prepare myself, based on my capabilities and preferences. You are welcome to try using a similar method, but please be safe and modify your training if needed to account for your current physical capabilities. An important thing to note is that earlier in my career, I trained for a lot of my food challenge weeks and weekends individually, since I didn’t always go on the long tours that I go on now. These days, I rarely ever do food challenges just a few at a time. After taking a long break, I use the 2-day preparation process, and then I’m ready to start trying food challenges again. I don’t need to train again because I am doing new food challenges almost everyday during my trips, and each challenge keeps my body ready for the next day’s event. During my tours, the focus is more on digestion and recovery, so I can be “empty” and ready for each “next” event along my tour route. If you have a specific question not answered in either video or any of the original Stomach Capacity Training articles, please contact me and I’ll do my best to help you!! Always be sure to win before you begin!! Train, Strategize, and Dominate!!

The Definition Of A Food Challenge

The definition of a food challenge is where you receive a specific prize for the completion of a specific meal or quantity of food (food and/or drink), while following the specific rules and regulations of the restaurant or food vendor that is offering the food challenge. Most commonly known around the world, a food challenge is what you were watching if you have ever seen an old episode of the TV show Man v Food starring Adam Richman. There are 28 different types of food challenges available that people are able to attempt but the most common types are burger, steak, burrito, pizza, taco, sandwich, chicken wing, team, soup, and hot dog challenges.

Another very common common type of food challenge is a spicy challenge which typically focuses more on heat rather than quantity. Most spicy food challenges involve finishing a particular menu item that is prepared using the Bhut Jolokia Chili (Ghost Pepper) which is over 100 times hotter than a raw jalapeno. In today’s constantly evolving world though, new peppers are being developed that are even spicier than the Ghost Pepper. The most common peppers to watch out for are the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper and the Carolina Reaper Pepper. Some restaurants even use pure capsaicin extract which is extremely spicy because capsaicin is the main active component of chili peppers that determines the spiciness level. Serious spicy challenges should not be taken lightly, and they can be very dangerous if you are not careful. The food burns going in, and also going out 🙂

Typically, there is a certain amount of time allowed for you to finish the meal which is set by the particular food vendor. If you successfully complete the meal within the time limit and also follow all of the “house rules”, then you win and get a prize. Smaller food challenges may award you with a special shirt or hat, a certificate of completion, and/or the restaurant may even put your name or picture up on their Wall Of Fame. Most larger food challenges award you by giving you the entire meal for free or at a very significant discount, and some even offer additional prizes such as a gift certificate to the restaurant or even cash money. The prize is also set by the particular vendor hosting the challenge. Challenges offering big prizes typically attract more attempts.

A food challenge is typically offered as a menu item that is available every day of the week during normal business hours. It is advised that you always notify the restaurant a few days beforehand to make sure that the restaurant is prepared for you since many challenges involve the use of custom made buns, specially cut pieces of meat, or other items that are only needed for the particular food challenge that are not always readily available. Other restaurants may only offer the challenge one night per week as a fun weekly event. The most common weekly food challenge is for a restaurant to offer a taco challenge on “Taco Tuesdays”. A challenge must be available at least one time per week in order to be considered a food challenge. If not, the event is then considered a contest and usually involves many people. The Definition Of An Eating Contest

An eating contest is where 2 or more individuals/teams compete to see who can eat/drink the largest quantity of a particular food in a particular amount of time. The most famous example of an eating contest is the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest held every July 4th for Independence Day in the United States. For that event, some of the best competitive eaters from all over the United States get together to see how many hot dogs and buns they can each inhale in just 10 minutes. Eating contests can be held at local restaurants or bars, and often times they are held at festivals, fairs, and other events or gatherings. They can be very fun to both compete in and watch. Eating contests are typically held one time per year (especially ones held at fairs and festivals), but some restaurants around the world even host eating contests up to once per month. Any eating event available once per week or more is typically not considered an eating contest. It is then labeled as an eating challenge. For the definition of a food challenge, click here.

The most typical eating contest foods are hot dogs, pizza, chicken wings, burgers, corn, and tacos. There are also some extra spicy eating contests that usually involve chicken wings smothered in a Ghost Pepper sauce. The time limit for each eating contest is set by the particular contest host, and varies depending on many different factors. Any eating contest lasting 3 minutes or less is considered a sprint, just like the running term, and focuses completely on speed eating. An eating contest lasting 10 minutes or longer is considered a marathon, also just like the running term, and focuses mostly on stomach capacity. Most eating contests have time limits in between 3 and 10 minutes (6 minute and 8 minute contests are very common) which then focus on both speed eating and stomach capacity. Any eating contest lasting 12-15 minutes is considered an ultra-marathon. Eating contests lasting longer than 15 minutes are not recommended because they can get very boring, and the chances of a contestant “getting sick” increase significantly as the time limit increases.

Contest prizes can also vary greatly depending on many different factors. Longer & tougher contests typically have better prizes than shorter contests, but the main factor is the budget of the contest host and sponsors. They are currently very rare, but some eating contests offer cash prizes worth over $1000 American dollars, which usually always attract higher level competitive eaters because the prizes for winning more than compensate their travel expenses if they do actually win. Many eating contests have first place prizes worth between $400 and $800 American dollars, and also attract higher level competitive eaters within a few hundred miles. A majority of eating contests offer first place prizes between $100 and $300 American dollars. Then their are many contests too that offer great prizes other than cash such as gift certificates, nice electronics, free trips, sports memorabilia, or nice apparel from the particular contest host or sponsors. Higher level prizes typically attract higher level news media and social media attention. Every now and then, there are generous contest sponsors that provide small gifts for all contestants just for competing, but that is also very rare.

Eating contests can be held for a large variety of reasons, and competitive eating is a fun sport growing in popularity every day throughout the world. The most fun contests though to compete in and watch are a combination of both a food challenge and an eating contest, where individuals or teams race to finish a particular quantity of food rather than just seeing how much they can eat. This competitive eating event is considered an eating challenge contest. For the definition of an eating challenge contest, click here.

Defining An Eating Challenge Contest

An eating challenge contest is the combination of both a food challenge and an eating contest where 2 or more individuals or teams compete to see who can finish a specific meal or quantity of food (food and/or drink) first. There are 2 different types of eating challenge contests. The first type is usually hosted by a restaurant that already hosts a food challenge, where people and/or teams compete to see who can finish the actual food challenge first. This type of eating challenge contest is great for restaurants wanting to kickoff a brand new food challenge, regenerate interest in an existing food challenge, or even celebrate the particular diner’s or restaurant’s anniversary. The second type can be hosted by any restaurant or bar, and at any festival, fair, event, or gathering, where people and/or teams compete to see who can finish a particular amount of food first which is designated by the contest host. For example, rather than seeing who can eat the most hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes (an eating contest), the host may decide to see who can eat 10 hot dogs and buns the fastest. Challenge contests are very common when the food vendor sponsor is only able to supply a limited amount of food or if the food served has expensive food costs associated. They are also an effective way to help reduce food waste.

The “house rules” and regulations for an eating challenge contest are designated by the particular contest host, and every contestant or team begins with the exact same amount of food and/or drink. Eating challenge contests typically all have a maximum time limit too, just like regular eating contests. If there are many spectators in attendance watching the event, it is recommended to keep the time limit under 15 minutes to maintain interest and excitement. The challenge contest ends when all of the winners have finished their entire meal (challenge), or when the time limit expires. If nobody finishes the entire meal before the time expires, it is then up to the contest host to judge the winners based on either sight, quantity remaining, or the weight of the food remaining. If the contest awards prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, but only 1 person finished their challenge within the time limit, then 2nd and 3rd place should be decided based on sight, quantity remaining, or the weight of the food remaining. These contests can be very close depending on the amount of food and the talent level and stomach capacity of the eaters. Eaters must use both excellent technique and great strategy to win.

The prizes for eating challenge contests are typically very similar to the prizes awarded in standard eating contests. To go back and review the definition of an eating contest, click here. Entrance fees are more common for eating challenge contests than standard eating contests because contestants are guaranteed to receive a certain amount of food, and are almost always welcome to bring home the remaining leftovers. If there is an entrance fee though, there is usually always a prize for winning that makes it worth competing. A majority of the time though, the entrance fees don’t actually go towards paying for the food or prizes, and they go towards supporting a particular charity organization that the event is sponsoring. If the restaurant tries to make money through entrance fees while awarding a small prize, the event is typically not successful or well attended.

These are typically less promoted with a smaller crowd consisting mostly of the eaters’ family and friends, but sometimes restaurants like to host an event where many eaters all get together and attempt to defeat the restaurant’s food challenge at the same time. The time limit and “house rules” are the same as the standard food challenge, and everyone begins at the same time. Sometimes, eaters themselves get a group of friends together to all go and attempt a restaurant’s food challenge. The prizes for these smaller events are typically the same as the regular food challenge prizes for the winners, and the cost of the challenge is usually the same for the losers. Rarely, the restaurant owner may choose to award an extra prize for the champion of the group.
